"You were a dreamer, you dreamed and you flew, Everything was open, for you. A timeless one of beauty, a child so wild and free, Everything is opening again, you'll see."*
I wrote these words to a song a few years ago. On Monday morning, I am driving away from New Mexico...with the hope and prayer that my words are prophetic! I'll be keeping a blog as the kids and I journey.
Here is my first entry:
SAYING YES, July 16, 2014
You know how a journey sometimes begins before it actually physically begins? How you seem to be projected forward metaphysically, so that circumstances and energy show up and align with the journey you are about to take? Where did your journey begin? You may point to birth, or a seemingly seminal event in your life…others will refer to past lifetimes. But when did YOU start to put in motion the arc of your (preferred) journey, in this lifetime? Me? Well, I could point to writing my first song at the age of 4 – “Kindergarten Blues,” by the way – or to winning a talent show at the age of 12 or 13…or to standing on the balcony of the Waldorf Astoria’s penthouse at 20, knowingly and expectantly gazing out over the Manhattan skyline while some Kennedy’s and others partied behind me… or maybe to performing on private yachts in New York harbor accompanied by master musicians…or to my sudden and dramatic – and supposedly short-term! – move to New Mexico 23 years ago.
See, that’s my point: choose the point, and you place the arc. So, really, YOU get to frame your story…to choose the starting point and define the arc.
This morning I met my postwoman outside of my house. ”When are you moving?” she asked. I was shocked! I had never spoken to her of my plans or desires or wishes, having hardly seen her over the past few months. Am I that transparent, I wondered?! (More likely, she’s just highly observant and tied into the flow of people and energy.) In any event, I could hardly answer her with something definitive.
You see, I am embarking on a journey this coming Monday. It IS a physical one…and my favorite kind, at that – a road trip! My kids and I are heading back east for up to a month…or more. That’s the physical part of the journey. The part that is most exciting for me, though, is the freeing of my mind, body, heart and soul from place and the expectations and demands and societal restrictions of life, routine and relationship.
I am open to much on this journey and I can feel the energy of movement, excitement and openness as I am projected forward. Not only can my postwoman sense it, the people I am meeting are in alignment with that energy and expectancy…wanting to talk with me about my journey and my desires…to pass along well wishes and faith in an unknown future…almost like I can hear a giant, collective, “You go girl!” being exhorted in my direction!
So where does my (preferred) journey begin? Surprisingly, not with today or this coming Monday, or with a seminal musical or public moment…but rather with the moment I embraced the words on the Jonathon Livingston Seagull poster my parents gifted me with when I was very young: “They can because they think they can…”
To this, I say yes.
